Ilion True Value Hardware is proud to once again take the lead in organizing two community clean-up events as part of the 2025 Canal Clean Sweep, a statewide initiative coordinated by Parks & Trails New York to celebrate Earth Day and protect our beloved canalway communities.
This marks our third year hosting these cleanups, and we couldn’t be more excited to continue this meaningful tradition. In 2024, we had a record turnout, with volunteers helping to remove over 40 bags of debris from the Ilion Marina and Erie Canalway Trail—proof of what we can achieve together when community spirit leads the way!

Think Local, Thrive Local: The Power of Supporting Independent Stores

9/2/2024

The Importance of Shopping at Locally Owned Independent Stores

In today's fast-paced, convenience-driven world, it's easy to default to big-box retailers and online giants for our shopping needs. However, there's a growing movement that encourages us to rethink our shopping habits and consider the benefits of supporting locally owned independent stores. These small businesses are more than just places to buy goods—they are the backbone of our communities. Here’s why shopping local is so important:

1. Strengthening the Local Economy
When you spend money at a locally owned store, a larger portion of that money stays within your community. According to research, for every $100 spent at a local business, about $68 stays in the local economy, compared to only $43 when shopping at a national chain. This means that by choosing to shop locally, you’re directly contributing to the economic health of your town or city. The money circulates through local taxes, wages, and purchases from other local businesses, creating a ripple effect that benefits everyone.

2. Creating and Preserving Jobs
Small businesses are significant job creators. In fact, they account for nearly half of all private-sector jobs in the United States. When you shop at a local independent store, you’re helping to create jobs for your neighbors, friends, and family members. This not only supports the livelihood of individuals but also contributes to a more vibrant and stable community.

3. Fostering Community and Relationships
Locally owned stores are often more than just places to shop; they are community hubs where relationships are built and nurtured. The owners and employees are usually members of the community who know their customers by name and are genuinely invested in providing excellent service. These stores contribute to the unique character of the neighborhood and foster a sense of belonging that’s hard to find in large, impersonal chain stores.

4. Supporting Sustainable Practices
Many independent stores prioritize sustainability, sourcing products locally, and offering goods that are made with care and responsibility. By shopping at these stores, you’re often choosing products that have a smaller carbon footprint, supporting ethical practices, and contributing to a more sustainable future.

5. Preserving Unique and Diverse Offerings
Local independent stores often carry a diverse range of products that you won’t find in big-box stores. These unique offerings reflect the character and needs of the community, providing a shopping experience that is personalized and special. Whether it’s a handmade craft, a rare book, or a specialty food item, these stores offer treasures that celebrate diversity and creativity.

6. Encouraging Entrepreneurship and Innovation
Small businesses are often started by entrepreneurs who are passionate about their products and services. By supporting these businesses, you’re encouraging innovation and creativity within your community. These entrepreneurs are more likely to take risks, introduce new ideas, and adapt to the needs of their customers, creating a dynamic and responsive local marketplace.

7. Building a Resilient Community
When a community supports its local businesses, it builds resilience against economic downturns. Locally owned businesses are more likely to weather tough times because they are invested in their community and have loyal customer bases. They also contribute to a diverse economy that is less reliant on any single industry or large employer, making the community as a whole more resilient.

Shopping at locally owned independent stores is a powerful way to make a positive impact on your community. It strengthens the local economy, creates jobs, fosters community, supports sustainability, preserves unique offerings, encourages entrepreneurship, and builds resilience. The next time you need to make a purchase, consider the benefits of shopping local. It’s not just about buying a product; it’s about investing in your community and making a difference in the place you call home.

Let’s celebrate and support the small businesses that make our neighborhoods vibrant, unique, and strong. After all, when local businesses thrive, we all do.
